Brief History of Costa Rica

On September 18, 1502, Christopher Columbus was the first European explorer to encounter Costa Rica. Costa Rica was named by Spaniard Gil Gonzalez Davila, meaning "Rich Coast". When Columbus arrived there were only four major indigenous tribes in Costa Rica. Of the few hundred thousands that resided here, some fled where most died of small pox brought from the Spanish. They then brought in African Slaves. Costa Rica has abolished their Army to fund for education. It has been at peace now without an army for decades.

25% of Costa Rican land is set aside as protected areas and national parks.
